Use the Moto G with Tracfone BYOP

How to Use the Moto G on Tracfone: A Guide by TracfoneReviewer

This Guide to using a Motorola, Moto G on the Tracfone BYOP program is put together by TracfoneReviewer with help from many visitors to this blog who shared their knowledge and experience.

Use the Moto G on Tracfone BYOP
The Moto G is a very popular mid-level smartphone widely available on many carriers, and unlocked. But wouldn't it be nice if such a solid Android phone were usable with Tracfone prepaid service? Well keep reading...

Tracfone is a prepaid, low cost cell phone and service provider. They offer minute cards with varying amounts of minutes, and cell phones to use the minutes with.

In 2013, Tracfone first began offering Android powered smartphones for use on their prepaid network. Since then, they have continued to add new Android phones to the list of phones they offer. These Android phones are locked to Tracfone, and cannot be used with other providers. (See the full list of phones, with basic specs and features compared, on our Tracfone Android Phone List.)

And while the Android phones they offer are getting better, like the LG Ultimate 2 or Moto E, they still are a little behind, and have limited options.

And then came along the Tracfone BYOP program.

Introduction to Tracfone BYOP

The 'Bring Your Own Phone' program, or Tracfone BYOP, allows users to bring a wider variety of smartphones to use with Tracfone prepaid service. Phones are limited to only those that use Verizon 3G and 4G LTE, but this still offers some great possibilities, including the Motorola Droid 3, Samsung Fascinate, iPhone 4S and more.

See the full list of phones, and all the details on the program, on our Tracfone BYOP page. And read all about using 4G LTE devices with Tracfone in our recent blog post.

These are pretty good phones, but not all of them have the latest operating systems, and some are a few years old. It would be nice to have a newer phone, with the latest OS and decent screen, with Tracfone's super low cost service. However, BYOP phones do receive Triple Minutes for Life which is nice.

The details on which phones work with Tracfone BYOP (beyond that it must be Verizon 3G and now also 4G LTE) are a little murky. And it doesn't help that Customer Service are notorious for giving out bad information and telling customers one phone won't work, when later it does end up working.

But there were hopes for the Verizon branded 3G Moto G, which retails for just $100 (or less) and is for use with Verizon prepaid service.

Now, multiple sources are confirming activating a Moto G on Tracfone, so we are sharing this information with you so that you can have the option of using the Moto G with Tracfone BYOP if you so desire.

What is the Moto G?

The Moto G is an Android powered smartphone created by Motorola while they were owned by Google (Motorola is now owned by Lenovo)

The Moto G has a first and second generation, but we will be talking only about the first generation Moto G which was released in 2013. The newer Moto G (2nd gen) which was released in Sept. 2014, does not work with Tracfone at this time.

The Moto G (1st Gen) is a workhorse kind of phone that does the daily tasks efficiently and painlessly. It has a 4.5" IPS display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection that is stunning, especially when compared to more expensive phones. It features front and rear cameras, with flash and autofocus on the rear 5 MP camera.

Let's take a quick look at the list of specs for the Moto G:

Moto G Specs and Features

The Moto G has a number of features that are somewhat similar to the Tracfone LG Ultimate 2, with several noticeable improvements.
Moto G tracfone byop
Moto G Front and Back
  • Latest Android OS - Currently 4.4.4
  • 4.5" IPS Touchscreen (720x1280)
  • 5 MP Rear Camera, 1.3 MP Front Camera
  • Quad-Core 1.2 Ghz Processor
  • Adreno 305 Graphics
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 GB Internal Memory
  • Micro USB and 3.5mm headphone slots
  • GPS
  • FM Radio
  • Battery Talk time 24 hours
  • See even more specs at GSMArena.

A couple of key features that put the Moto G ahead of any of Tracfone's current phones are the processor, Internal Memory, Battery Life, Operating System, and Touchscreen.

The processor is a powerful quad-core 1.2 Ghz Cortex A7, a multitasking champ that runs well with the 1 GB of RAM. Internal Memory is 8 GB (some have 16) which is 4 GB more than current Tracfone devices, and is enough space to load all the apps you want.

The touchscreen is beautiful, and has plenty of resolution for this kind of price. The Moto G's battery is amazing, and can easily last two full days with moderate to low use. Surprisingly, the phone also charges very quickly. The long batter life isn't due to a large battery, but to the processor and other power-saving features.

Lastly, the Moto G will be getting Android 5.0 when it comes out, which none of Tracfone's other smartphones will get (except perhaps the Moto E). If you want the latest Android OS, the Moto G has you covered.

The Camera on the Moto G is fine, but doesn't really stand out, and can't compete with high-end devices like an iPhone 6 or Nexus 6. If you want a fantastic phone camera experience, you can buy these phones and use them with the 4G LTE service on Tracfone.

Finally, the fit and form of the Moto G is nice and comforting, giving the user a feeling of sturdyand ergonomic  construction.

Well, as you probably guessed, we are pretty big fans of the Moto G because of two key points: Price and Quality. For the money, there is probably no better phone currently available (besides the 2nd gen Moto G of course). But enough about the phone, time to share exactly how to get a Moto G working with Tracfone!

How to Use the Moto G on Tracfone BYOP

Now that you are familiar with what the Moto G offers, and what the Tracfone BYOP program is, we are going to share exactly how to get the Moto G to run on Tracfone BYOP. Note, there is no guarantee that a particular Verizon Moto G will work with Tracfone, but if you have the patience and are willing to take a risk, it is possible.

Step 1 - Find a used or refurbished Verizon (or pageplus) Moto G (1st Gen) on Amazon, eBay or elsewhere. The phone needs to have been used on Verizon prepaid for at least 6 months (we have not confirmed this, but it appears to be the case).

moto g on tracfone prepaid
Verizon Moto G
Step 2 - Go to Tracfone's BYOP page and enter the ESN/IMEI/MEID and follow the steps to register it, which includes a $10 activation charge. Note, this is the step that you might have the most difficulty getting through, as phones on Tracfone BYOP seem to be required to have been used on Verizon for a certain time, but no longer be active. If your phone fails the first time, you can try calling customer service, but that can be a challenge. Best advice from users is to have patience, and keep trying.

Step 3 - Once registered, log into your Tracfone account on the Tracfone website and choose "Transfer my Number and Service from One Tracfone to Another" and follow the steps there.

Step 4 - Your Moto G should be active in a few hours, or up to 24 hours. If it doesn't become active, you may have to call customer service to sort things out.

And now you have a Moto G active on Tracfone BYOP! This step by step guide was originally provided by an anonymous Tracfone user for TracfoneReviewer to share here. Thanks anonymous user!

Unlocked post paid verizon Moto G worked no problem. I am guessing this phone was flashed by ebay seller. It was advertised as being good for "PagePlus" also
From Anonymous on Oct 12th, 2014:
so all statements are not true to all extent i bought a new droid x2 "mb870"? no contract phone witch according to this post wont work anyway my steps to make it work step one set up with tracfone this alone wont work it will get activated to your account but the phone will not go through the activation to get that to work i had to call the (Verizon prepaid activation number "number" when i did this i received my telephone number (to let you know at this point i was completely pissed with tracfone and was just going to go to Verizon) when i got my number i thought at first it was a Verizon# so i went to the verizon site and entered the number but it said it wasn't a verizon number so i called back the tracfone support they said this is a tracfone number my best guess is that when i called the verizon act number it sent the unlock code well after a few min with tracfone the phone works.
The last comment, while a little hard to understand, seems to indicate that it may be possible, in a roundabout way, to activate new Verizon phones with Tracfone if you follow the right steps.

We hope this information, and the comments and input provided by anonymous users, will help you be able to activate a Moto G on Tracfone, if you so desire. Be sure to let us know how it goes, by leaving a comment below.

Be sure to visit our Tracfone BYOP page where there is lots of general information, and a lot of user comments. Also visit our Cell Phone Reviews page if you are looking for a new phone, but may want an easier route than the BYOP program. The Moto E is a great option, with somewhat reduced features compared to the Moto G, but still a solid phone.

We also share Tracfone Promo Codes each month, but unfortunately these codes don't work on Android phones.

If you're curious about how minutes work with smartphones, read our guide, How Minutes Work on Tracfone Android Phones. : D

Thanks for visiting! We will continue to update this as information becomes available. Keep up to date with us by following on Facebook!

Additionally, you can find a new Verizon Moto G on www.frys.com and use promo code 4397819 to get it for $48. But you may have to use it on Verizon prepaid for a few months before it will work on Tracfone. Thanks C. P. for the tip!

Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop Tracfone - Specs and Buying Guide

The Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop (A564C) Released for Tracfone

We are sharing details and specs below about the Alcatel A564C touchscreen smartphone newly released for use with Tracfone Wireless. TracfoneReviewer will continue to update this post as more information is available.

tracfone a564c alcatel onetouch icon pop
Tracfone Alcatel onetouch Icon Pop
See links at the end of the post for buying options from Amazon and eBay!

The Alcatel Onetouch ICON Pop has a really long name, and also a really large screen, the largest for a Tracfone device yet, at 5". This phone was released by Tracfone rather quickly, along with the LG Ultimate 2.

Tracfone is moving a little faster at adding new Android smartphones to their lineup that already includes several other options. But until now they were lacking a smartphone with a larger screen size, and the Alcatel Onetouch (and LG Ultimate 2) appears to fill that void.

The previous screen size options were the LG Optimus Fuel with a 3.5" touchscreen, and the LG Optimus Dynamic II at 3.8", among others.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Style, with a 4" touchscreen, and the Moto E, with 4.3" touchscreen, are both expected to be released in the near future, but have been overtaken before even being released. The LG Ultimate 2, which was released at the same time as the Icon Pop, has a 4.5" screen, and shares many similar features and specs.

In case you're wondering (like we were), here is the breakdown of why the name is so long. Alcatel is the company name, Onetouch is the name of the line of phones, and Icon Pop ( or sometimes POP Icon) is the name of this phone. There are a few other Alcatel Onetouch phones, like the Pop Mega, and Pop Star, but Tracfone isn't adding them to their selection. Tracfone then classifies this as the A564C, with 'C' denoting that it uses CDMA technology.

Let's look at what you can expect from the Alcatel Icon Pop.

What to Expect from the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on Tracfone

First off, the Icon Pop will be used on Verizon CDMA 3G service through Tracfone prepaid. This is the same as Tracfone's other Smartphone offerings at this time.

It will have Triple Minutes for Life, and minutes will be separated into Talk, Text and Data. For more info on this, read our post, How Minutes Work on Tracfone Android Phones.

The 5" touchscreen is obviously the most noticeable feature on the Alcatel A564C, but there are several other features that are very exciting for Tracfone users who are looking for an upgrade on their current phones.

Time to take a closer look at the Icon Pop features and specs.

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop Features and Specs

We will cover the main features for the A564C, followed by the technical specifications below.
  • Android 4.4
  • 3G on Verizon networks
  • WiFi
  • 5MP Rear Camera
  • 0.3MP Front Camera
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS
  • Large Screen Icons
  • Hearing Aid Compatible, Hands free Speaker
  • MP3 Player, FM Radio
  • Triple Minutes for Life
  • Flashlight
  • Caller ID, Call Waiting, Voicemail, etc.
  • Voice Dialing
  • Access to over 1 Million apps via Google Play
Alcatel A564C Icon Pop Specs:
  • Size: 5.55" x 2.84" x 0.39"
  • 5" touschreen (854 x 480)
  • 1.2 Ghz Quad-core processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 4 GB Internal Memory(~2GB available), Up to 32 GB Micro SD card Compatible

  • 2000 mAh Battery with 9.5 hours talk time, 20 days standby (2.5 hrs to fully charge)
alcatel onetouch icon pop tracfone
Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop and 5" screen
A number of the features and specs listed above for the Alcatel Ontouch Icon Pop are improvements over Tracfone's older smartphones, and similar to the Moto E and LG Ultimate 2. Let's take a closer look.

One of the big features is the processor and RAM on the Icon pop. With a quad core and 1 GB, it should be able to keep up with your needs. The LG Ultimate 2 and Moto E each have 1 GB of RAM and 1.2 Ghz processors, but they are only dual core. Other Android phones like the ZTE Valet and LG Optimus Dyamic II are single core with 512 MB RAM.

Another big feature on the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop is the camera. It has a 5MP rear camera plus a 0.3MP front camera. And after looking through sources, it appears to have autofocus.

The Ultimate 2 also has a 5MP camera with autofocus, and 1.3MP front camera. But the Moto E only has a 5MP rear camera and no autofocus.

Lastly, the 5" screen is a nice feature, and a bit bigger than the other smartphones from Tracfone at this time as we mentioned above. Some sources indicate that it has a resolution of 854 x 480 while we found others saying 960 x 540.

Our Thoughts on the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop

This phone brings some great new features to the table with a 5" screen and quad core processor. While this phone is still at the low end of the smartphone market, it is ahead of many of Tracfone's other devices.

Each new phone that Tracfone releases pushes the list of features further and further into what other carriers are using. Tracfone is still behind the curve, but they are trying to catch up. It is unlikely they will ever sell top of the line phones with their prepaid service, but at least users can get some newer tech.

The Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop is a a great looking phone with a nice large screen, but is it better than the Moto E and LG Ultimate 2? Spec-wise, it does have more processing cores, and a larger screen, but each user must choose what is important to themselves when selecting a phone. Not everyone, for example, wants a 5" screen.

At $150 from the Tracfone website, the Alcatel Icon Pop is the most expensive Tracfone yet. We  have just found the Alcatel on Amazon, as well as eBay with several attractive minutes bundles, and at a slightly discounted price:

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop available on Amazozn and eBay with Minutes options:

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on Amazon for $129 (plus $5 shipping)

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop on eBay for $119

Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop with 600 Minutes on eBay for $169

These are some pretty decent deals if you're looking to buy the phone along with minutes. Last check the Alcatel was in and out of stock on Tracfone's site. So if you are looking for this phone, you might want to move fast!

We will also be doing a full review of the Alcatel smartphone in the near future.

The Alcatel will be great for those looking for a big phone, and looking to impress with a large screen. Although these days, 6" screens or bigger seems to be necessary.

Let us know what you're thinking about this phone, and if you have any questions about it.

Here is the Alcatel ontouch interactive tutorial to see how the phone works.

LG ULTIMATE 2 Review, Specs, and Where to Buy for Tracfone

Tracfone LG Ultimate 2 Android Smartphone now Available!

Below we will share details and specs for the LG Ultimate 2 which was recently made available for use with Tracfone. TracfoneReviewer will continue to update this post as more information becomes available.

Tracfone LG L41C
Tracfone LG Ultimate 2
Note: The LG Ultimate 2 is now available with Minutes Bundle from eBay! See the last section below for links to the phone on both Amazon and eBay.

Another Android powered smartphone for use with Tracfone, has been released and it is the LG L41C, also known as the LG Ultimate 2. Tracfone continues to release newer, and slightly better, smartphones for use on their prepaid service.

The LG Ultimate 2 comes with Android 4.4 OS, a 5MP camera with autofocus, 1 GB RAM and uses Verizon 3G cell towers. It also havs a 4.5" screen, which will make many Tracfone users very excited.

Along with the LG Ultimate 2, there are several other Android phones coming, or already available for use with Tracfone. The LG Optimus Fuel, Samsung Galaxy Ace Style, and Moto E are some of the other options. You can also see the full list of smartphones by visiting our Tracfone Android Smartphone List. The Alcatel A564C Onetouch Icon Pop was also released by Tracfone, and we will be posting more on that very soon. It has a 5" screen, and Android 4.4, as well as a quad care processor.

Tracfone has a number of phones that they may be releasing in the future, like the Moto E, and possibly several Android phones for use on GSM networks. Keep up with our latest news and posts by following us on Facebook.

Now, let's take a closer look at what to expect from the LG Ultimate 2.

Tracfone LG L41C - What to Expect

Many of the details about the LG Ultimate 2 have become clear over the last few months that the phone has been available. It has become widely accepted as one of the best phones currently available from Tracfone, a long with the Moto E, and Alcatel Onetouch.

The LG Ultimate 2 has already been spotted for use with Straight Talk, and at a price of $130. It is also now listed on the Tracfone website for the same price, but is available from many online retailers like Amazon, eBay, HSN, and others, for just over $100.

The Ultimate 2 is basically very similar to the Verizon prepaid LG Optimus Exceed 2. which appears to be a well rounded smartphone.

You can expect easy viewing on the LG Ultimate 2's 4.5" touchscreen (800x400) that will make it bigger than the LG Optimus Fuel, Moto E, or LG Optimus Dynamic II. Only the Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop has a larger screen at this time, at 5".

As mentioned above, the dual core processor and 1 GB RAM give the Ultimate 2 good performance, and the ability to keep up with almost any app currently available for Androids. Many consumers are extremely happy to have the opportunity to upgrade from single core, 512 MB phones.

Another great feature that may be the most important for some people, is the amount of internal memory available for loading apps and other things. Initially it appeared that the LG Ultimate 2 would have 4GB of Internal Memory, with somewhat less than that actually usable. However, it has been reported that there is over 4GB of usable space on the LG Ultimate 2, meaning that it probably comes with 5GB or more of internal memory.

The Cameras on the LG Ultimate 2 are nothing amazing, but if you've been stuck with the cameras on older phones it will be a refreshing upgrade. The Ultimate 2 comes with a 5MP rear camera, and 1.3MP front camera. Both a capable of good pictures, and the rear camera has autofocus for reading bar codes etc.

Below is a list of the features and specifications for the Tracfone LG Ultimate 2.

LG Ultimate 2 Feature and Specs

First the features, and below the technical specs for the LG L41C.
  • Android 4.4
  • 3G on Verizon CDMA Networks
  • WiFi
  • 5MP Camera with Auto-focus
  • 1.3MP front facing camera
  • 3 Home Screens
  • Proximity Sensor
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS Enabled
  • Handsfree speaker, Hearing Aid Compatible
  • Call Waiting, Caller ID, Email, MMS, Voicemail
  • Voice Dialing
  • MP3 Player
  • Triple Minutes for Lfie and separate Call/Text/Data pools
  • Access to over 1 Million apps on Google Play
LG Ultimate 2 (L41C) Technical Specifications:
  • 5.01" x 2.63" x 0.38"
  • 4.5" IPS at 800x480 (240 DPI)
  • 1.2 Ghz Dual-core processor (Qualcomm)
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 5 GB Internal Memory (over 4GB usable space), up to 32GB Micro SD card compatible
  • Weight: 4.5 ounces
  • 2100 mAh Battery with 12 hours talk time/ 9 days standby
tracfone lg l41c ultimate 2
LG Ultimate 2 Keyboard
The L41C has some decent specs, with 1 GB of RAM, and a nice large screen, almost a full inch large than the previous phones.

While the battery is a decent size at 2100 mAh, the talk time and standby are less than the Moto E (which only has a 1980 mAh battery). It should last a full day with moderate use, but if you need a long battery life, the Moto E does an excellent job managing power consumption. Also turning GPS, WiFi and Data off will help conserve battery life.

Many of the other specs on the Ultimate 2 are a big improvement over phones like the LG Optimus Dynamic II, ZTE Valet, and Samsung Galaxy Centura.

Tracfone was relatively quick in releasing the the LG Ultimate 2 and Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop. We heard about the Samsung Galaxy Ace Style months ago, but it has not surfaced, and may even be a lesser option with these new phones now available.

LG Ultimate 2 Review and Thoughts

So how does the Ultimate 2 perform, and what are our likes and dislikes about the phone? Glad you asked! Let's jump right in. We've collected a lot of information from around the web, and even from user comments below to share as balanced a review of the LG Ultimate 2 as we can.

Best Features and Likes for the Ultimate 2
We want to focus here on a few key features for the Ultimate 2 that make it stand out from other phones available from Tracfone at this time, and that might be important for those looking at buying this phone.

The internal memory and RAM, screen size, and cameras are some of the biggest factors that may lead you to be interested in the LG Ultimate 2, so let's take a closer look.

The internal memory for the Ultimate 2 is the space available for installing Android apps, and saving other data like pictures. The Ultimate 2 comes with over 4 GB of usable space, which is a lot compared to the 2 GB or less available on most other Tracfone smartphones. And some apps and data can even be transferred to an external SD card, freeing up additional space.

1 GB of RAM and a dual-core processor are about the minimum needed these days to comfortable run all the popular apps on an Android smartphone, and the LG Ultimate 2 meets this just fine. Many users report 200 MB or more of available RAM at any given time, and if you use a speed boosting app you can get even more free space. For those that might not know, RAM basically allows you to run multiple apps at the same time. So more RAM means more things can go on at once without problems, and less RAM means less stuff at once. When you get to 512 MB of RAM or less, you start to run into issues with overloading the RAM, which causes apps to close and other annoying stuff.

The LG Ultimate 2 has a 4.5" touchscreen. which is one of the biggest features for this phone. Previously, Tracfone only had phones with 3.5" to 3.8" screens, which may be fine for some people, but for others it is just a little too small. 4.5" is a nice screen size for reading, watching videos, typing on the virtual QWERTY keyboard, and really everything else. The only reason why one might not want a screen that large is for portability. But these days a 4.5" screen is average sized, and in no way uncomfortable to hold or use. Screen quality is very good, with 480x800 size, and 240 dpi.

Finally, front and rear facing cameras with flash and autofocus are a feature many Tracfone users have desired for a long time, and the LG Ultimate 2 delivers. The 5MP rear camera performs well and functions as it should. You can scan barcodes or QR codes with it, and the image quality is one of the best for Tracfone devices. Remember that if you want to send an image, you need to turn on you data.

Many users report being extremely satisfied with the Ultimate 2, as it is a phone with enough modern specs to keep up with other devices. The ability to have a smartphone running Android 4.4 on Tracfone's low cost network is a great thing.

But now we do want to share a few negatives about the phone to keep in mind.

Dislikes for the Ultimate 2 with Tracfone
First off, there is a lot to like about the Ultimate 2. It has a large screen, good cameras, great amount of memory available, good processor and RAM, and plenty of other things. But there are a few things to be aware of before you purchase it.

Many of the negatives with the LG Ultimate 2 actually revolve around using it with Tracfone service, and so aren't directly related to the phone. However, since you must use this phone with Tracfone, we will cover them here.

Our dislikes for the Ultimate 2 include using Verizon cell towers, splitting texts, calling and data up, tracking minutes, and it doesn't use the latest version of Android. If you already use Tracfone, and especially if you already use an Android phone with Tracfone, then you already know most of these issues.

Tracfone currently only uses Verizon 3G CDMA cell phone towers for all their Android devices. This works great if you live in an area with good coverage. If you don't, then it isn't so great. You should check with friends or neighbors in your area to see if they use Verizon, and you can also enter your ZIP code on the Tracfone website and see if the Android phones come up, which will help indicate if there is good service in your area.

However, if Tracfone doesn't show Android phones for your area, or tells you that you can't activate a smartphone at your ZIP code, that doesn't necessarily mean you won't get service there! Many users report activating their smartphone using a ZIP code from another area, and then having  no problem with reception. Just be aware that you are taking responsibility for the risk.

For all Tracfone Android and BYOP phones, prepaid minutes are split into three buckets or pools. You have calling minutes, texts, and data. All airtime is also tripled when adding it to the phone. This is generally a great deal for most people. However, for heavy texters, you might run out of texts more quickly, and there is no way to just buy more texts, you will have to buy a regular minutes card. This isn't a big deal for most people, but be aware of it.

Tracking minutes on the Android phones isn't as easy as before. Older 'dumb' phones displayed your remaining minutes and service time on the home-screen, and this isn't possible on Android devices. But it is easy enough to go online to the Tracfone website and check your balance there, or download and use the Tracfone app (just search for Tracfone app in the Google Play Store).

The LG Ultimate 2 runs on Android 4.4, which is no longer the latest version of Android. The latest is 5.0 lolipop, and the Ultimate 2 will not be updated to it. Don't worry though, Android 5.0 isn't really that great in my opinion, and mostly just changes the appearance for a lot of things, and adds extra steps for several functions.

As a final negative for all the Android phones, you can't use Promotional Codes with Tracfone Android devices. This isn't a huge deal, but for those that rely on the extra minutes, it is disappointing.

Overall, consumers who haven't used a Tracfone device may be disappointed with the customer service, and sometimes limited coverage of cell service, but for everyone familiar with Tracfone, the service shouldn't be any different.

Our opinion of the LG Ultimate 2 is very high, as it meets or exceeds many expectations for a good, modern smartphone. It is worth the money, especially if you buy it bundled with minutes.

Compared to the Moto E and Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop
LG Ultimate 2 Review
LG Ultimate 2
Two other Tracfone devices that are on par with the Ultimate 2 are the Moto E, and Alcatel Onetouch. We will quickly compare each of these phones to the Ultimate 2 in case you are considering them.

The Moto E is a well designed budget smartphone in the same lineup as the Moto G and Moto X. The Moto E has a smaller, 4.3" screen, but it is slightly better quality. The Moto E doesn't have a front camera, nor autofocus or flash, which are deal-breakers for some. The Moto E also doesn't accept an external SD card, so you're stuck with just the internal memory. Battery life is probably better on the Moto E, but the battery isn't removable. Overall, the Moto E is a great phone, but the Ultimate 2 beats it in many categories.

The Alcatel Onetouch Icon Pop features a larger, 5" screen and quad-core processor. If you want the biggest screen available, the Onetouch is your choice. But users report some minor video lag when watching Youtube, and in general, the Ultimate 2 is a better all around phone. They both have front/rear cameras, and both 1 GB RAM. The Alcatel Onetouch has around 2GB of internal memory, which is a bit less than the Ultimate 2. So if you want the largest screen, go with the Alcatel, but otherwise, the Ultimate 2 is a slightly better choice.

How Do Minutes Work on Tracfone Android Phones?

A Short Guide to Adding Minutes to Tracfone Android Smartphones

tracfone android minutes
Guide to Tracfone Android Minutes
Over the last year, Tracfone has begun including a variety of Android powered smartphones in their lineup of low cost cell phones.

Tracfone provides both cell service and phones at a low cost and sells cards with varying minute amounts (60, 120, 200 etc.) that users can buy and add to their phone. When the minutes are added, the phone then uses those minutes when you call or text. You also get 90 days (in most cases) of service with each card.

This system where users can buy minutes only when needed helps to make Tracfone service very inexpensive for people who don't use their phones very often.

Many Tracfone devices also come with double or triple minutes for life, meaning you get double (or triple) the minutes when you add a new card.

All of the new Android phones from Tracfone come with Triple Minutes for Life, which is a great bonus. Even smartphones like the iPhone 4 which you can use with Tracfone, and other BYOP phones get Triple Minutes for Life. Learn more about 'Bringing your own phone' to Tracfone to see what phones will work.

Let's begin by explaining exactly how minutes work on the Android smartphones from Tracfone.

How Tracfone Minutes are Added to Android Smartphones

With the Android phones, the way minutes are credited to your account is a bit different than how things worked for older phones. (see our full list of current Android smartphones from Tracfone if you're not sure which phones are smartphones)

For phones like the LG 840G, when you added a 60 minute card, you would get it tripled to 180 minutes which you could then use for talk, text and surfing the web.

For Android phones, Talk, Text and Web are split up when you add the minutes. So if you add a 60 minute card, you will get it tripled to 180 minutes, and then this is split up into 180 minutes for talking, 180 texts, and 180 MB for web.

So to make it clear:
  • Non-Android phones use one 'pool' for minutes.
  • Android phones use three separate 'pools' for talk, text and data.

For most people an Android phone is a great deal because you get the same number of minutes for talking, while also receiving texts and data. But there is an important difference that makes this not a great deal for everyone.

Related post - 6 Key Differences between Android and non-Android Tracfone Devices

The difference is that for people who text a lot, Android phones are not as good a deal. Let me explain:

For a non-Android device, each text costs .3 minutes. So with 180 minutes, you would get 600 texts.

On an Android phone, each text is 1 text (because texts are their own 'pool'). So with 180 minutes, you would get 180 texts (you would also still have 180 minutes for talking, and 180 mb of data).

If you are a heavy texter but want an Android phone, look into downloading apps that text for free. Simply visit the Google Play Store and search for 'free texting apps'.

The LG Optimus Dynamic II is a good Android phone currently available from Tracfone. So if you're looking for a smartphone, it is worth checking out. You can also visit our recent post on the Best Tracfone Cell Phone to get the latest info.

For those who don't want to switch to this new minutes system, phones like the LG 840G we mentioned above, the LG 306G, Moto EX431G, and Samsung S425G still use the one pool system for minutes (and all of these phones have Triple Minutes).

Good news for heavy texters, you can now Buy Additional Texts Online from Tracfone to add to your smartphone device.

If you have further questions on how minutes work, feel free to leave a comment below. Now, we want to go over one more important point:

How to Check Your Minutes Balance on Android Phones

android tracfone minutes
Tracfone airtime for Androids
This is a question many are asking, because there is no automatic location on Tracfone smartphones for accessing your current minutes balance like there is on non-Android phones.

But there is an easy way to check your balance. Simply sign into your account at Tracfone.com (or create one of you don't already have one) and go to your account page. You should see your phone listed there, and one of the options will be to check your current balance. Click this and after a few seconds you should see what your remaining balance looks like.

You can do this either on a computer, or from your phone. Additionally, there are two more options for checking your balance:

Enter the following url into your browser from your phone or computer and replace the numbers at the end with your phone number: https://www.tracfone.com/direct/CheckBalance?input_phone=1234567890

Or simply download the Tracfone App which allows you to see your service end date and balance.

That concludes this guide to how minutes work on Android phones. We hope you found this useful, and leave a comment with questions or thoughts.

Be aware that Tracfone Promo Codes don't work on Android phones, so this is also a small downside of the new smartphones.

6 Major Differences between Tracfone Android and Non-Android Devices

Comparing Android vs Non-Android Devices from Tracfone

Should you buy a new Android smartphone from Tracfone? Is it worth upgrading to these powerful devices that have recently become available to use with Tracfone prepaid service? We want to answer questions like these with this guide to understanding Android including 6 important differences to other Tracfone prepaid phones.

Let's start with a basic but important question:

What is an Android Phone?

android tracfone
Tracfone Android vs Non-Android
Any phone that uses the Android Operating System is considered an Android device. Basically, it is a standardized operating system for phones, like Windows OS for PC's.

Android allows users to have access to hundreds of thousands of different applications through the Google Play store and other locations. These apps provide added functionality, and many are free to download and use. There are apps for nearly anything you can think of, ranging from music and radio streaming, to games and entertainment.

For more about Android OS, here is a link to the Wikipedia page on Android.

Now, we want to mention here that there are three categories of phones form Tracfone at this time:

Three Types of Phones for Tracfone:
  • Android - Cell Phones that use Android OS
  • Non-Android - All other phones from Tracfone (visit our Cell Phone Reviews page to see them)
  • BYOP Phones - A new program from Tracfone that allows you to 'Bring Your Own Phone'. (follow the link to learn more about this program) including iPhone and Android devices
So there are a few different types of phones to choose from, but we won't get into that. We will focus just on Android smartphones, and comparing the difference between them and all other phones offered by Tracfone.

So let's get to the main question, how are Android smartphones different from other Tracfone devices?

6 Key Differences Comparing Android vs Non-Android Devices from Tracfone

A list comparing the major differences between phones with Android operating system, and all the rest that are available from Tracfone. Use this list to help choose whether an Android phone may be right for you.

Find Apps for Android
1. Access Thousands of Applications with Android Smartphones
Androids are called smartphones because of their increased functionality with access to standardized applications (apps). These apps can do many of the same things that computers programs do, including web browsing, photo editing, games and much much more.

Apps for Android phones are available from the Google Play Store and many are free or just a few dollars. There are over a million applications and they do quite a number of different things.

Access to applications gives Android phones almost unlimited functionality because you can always download and install a new app to do something you couldn't do before. Non-Android devices from Tracfone are usually limited to the features that come with the phone, like an alarm clock, web browser, etc.

Visit the Google Play Store to see some of the apps available to use with Android.

2. Minutes are Split into Three 'buckets' for Android Phones
One of the major differences between Tracfone's Android devices and their non-Android phones is the way minutes work.

android tracfone
Use the same prepaid card for Androids
On the non-Android phones (such as the LG 840G or LG 306G), when you add a 60 minute card, you get 60 minutes (or 180 if you have Triple Minutes for Life) for talking, texting and web browsing all in one 'bucket'. Also, texts cost only 0.3 minutes each.

For Android smartphones (like the ZTE Valet or LG Optimus Dynamic II), a 60 minute card will be split into three 'buckets' and give you 60 minutes calling, 60 texts, and 60mb data (and these will all be tripled to 180 with Triple Minutes for Life). So you get the same number of calling minutes (180), plus texting and data (180 of each)!

However, if you use texting almost exclusively, this may not be a great deal because you would only have 180 texts on the Android versus a total of 600 for the non android (180 minutes divided by 0.3 per text). But there are apps available on Android that text for free - like TextPlus or several others.

So prepaid minutes work a little differently, but for most, this is very beneficial.

3. Touchscreens on All Tracfone Android Smartphones
Not everyone likes to use a touchscreen, but all of the Android powered phones from Tracfone have touchscreens at this time.

Most smartphones these days only have a touchscreen, it is very common. But if you prefer the feel of buttons under your fingers, then you might want to stick with Tracfone's like the Samsung S390G or Motorola EX431G which both have full QWERTY keypads.

Additionally, you can visit our Tracfone BYOP page to learn about how you can bring a smartphone to use with Tracfone, including some phones with sliding keyboards. Visit the BYOP page for a phone list and all the details.

4. Android Phones are (generally) Newer
Most of the newest phones from Tracfone are all Android devices. And while Tracfone's current Android smartphone selection has mostly phones that are a few years old, their non-Android phone selection includes phones from 5-10 years ago.

If you're looking for a newest phones from Tracfone, Android is where you should look. There are a couple of new smartphones we are excited about which are the Samsung Galaxy Ace Style and LG Optimus Fuel.

5. Android Phones are (generally) More Expensive
Because the Android phones from Tracfone are newer and have more features, they also tend to be more expensive. Typically the phones will be priced above $100. There are a variety of online stores that offer some great deals, including deals with minutes. So shop around when searching for a phone.

But not all of the Android smartphones are expensive, you can even get the LG Optimus Dynamic for $20 on Amazon right now.

6. No Tracfone Promo Codes for Android
The last, and probably most disappointing difference between Android and other Tracfone cell phones is that the Android phones won't accept promo codes which you might be accustomed to using with other prepaid phones.

For a long time, Tracfone has provided special promotional codes which customers can use when buying new prepaid minutes to get extra minutes for free. This is a great deal, and you can get as many as 250 free minutes.

But these promo codes are not available for Tracfone Android Smartphones, which is too bad.

Bonus Point! You are Charged for Every Text You Receive on Android Phones
Thanks to David for mentioning this in the comments - On the Android phones you cannot choose which incoming texts you read (and are charged for). You are automatically charged for every incoming text, whether you read it or not.

On non-Android Tracfones you can choose not to read a text, and thus not be charged for it. So be aware of this, and if you receive a lot of spam texts, you may want to change your number when changing to an Android phone from Tracfone.

This concludes the list of key differences between Android smartphones and the regular cell phones offered by Tracfone. We hope these points will help you choose if an Android phone is best for you. If you have any questions, or additional points to add, leave a comment below!

Let's start with a basic but important question:

What are Android phones and how are they different from other Tracfone devices? Well. this is a question we have answered with a full article which you can read by following the link above . This is an important question to understand, and you should decide before proceeding further, if an Android phone is what you need.

The basic answer to the question is that an Android device is a phone that uses a common operating system, called Android, which allows users to have access to thousands of applications on Google Play.

Android phones are usually refereed to as smartphones, or Android smartphones, because of their increased functionality. They almost all have large touchscreens, and can do many things you would normally only be able to do on a computer such as browsing the web, checking email, surfing social media, and getting GPS directions.
